ROOM 2 – 1971/1977
In the first years of the 1970’s, Vigliaturo paints a large number of oils following his master Luigi Bertagna’s academic conception of painting. The development of his pictorial style during these years is evidence of his master’s influence.
Compared to his first works, there is maturity in the precision of the brushstroke and within the composition of his work, but it’s only at the beginning of the 1970’s that he matures a new pictorial concept thanks to his meeting with the Chieri painter Edoardo Ferrero who encourages him to deepen the study of colour, freeing himself from the conventions of purely academic drawing. For at least three years after, at the centre of his works there is a search for the solidity of form.
This phase is marked by his first urban landscapes, where a strong chromatic component begins to start breaking through his works. Landscapes prevail for a decade, which are painted both on a white background, such as “Matanza”, and on black background, such as “Imperia”, the town where Vigliaturo was during his year of National Service in 1969. During this period he paints familiar domestic subjects and places from his childhood memories: in the work “Acri, my home” he represents his childhood's home – which today has been restored and open to visitors. A childhood memory also inspired the oil on wood “Old trade, the cobbler” whose subject was one of the numerous cobblers in Acri that Vigliaturo saw working in their workshops
Colour was not only a pictorial instrument for the artist, but a real language, a need for truth; as Adalberto Rossi pointed out, in 1980, in his famous critique on the occasion of the exhibition in the Sala degli Ex Combattenti in Chieri: «On black backgrounds which exalt colours [...] he displays, above all, a rare graphic skill. [...] He paints with compact colours, without glazing, with a variety of colours, always in harmony, which give an evocative depth to the picture. Especially the roofs of the houses, with their different hues of red according to the light, which are a characteristic of the artist’s style, which blend with the white, yellow, mauve, and earthy colours of the front of the houses». This characteristic is clear in the work “Players”, inspired by the famous work by Cézanne, but also by the numerous players who crowded in to the places at Acri.
